Reading Notes: Cupid and Psyche, Part A

Cupid and Psyche : Written by Apuleius

When I read through these stories I find myself trying to relate it back to modern day times and how a story would look today. I did that a lot with this particular story because it reminded me a lot of social media.
When the beautiful Psyche goes to live in "The Magical Palace" she learns that her new life is surrounded by gold, jewels, riches! She is in awe and allows herself to trust the invisible servants (which reminded me of a smart house/alexa situation). She puts away her grief for a short period and allows herself to bask in the new life she will have. Afterall, she was expecting something terrible. When her unknown husband comes he tells her not to question anyone, especially her sisters about his appearance and who he really is.
Psyche would spend her days in sorrow, sad, burdened with grief because she could not tell her sisters that she was okay.
Later on, she gets to see her sisters and they are mystified by Psyche's new life. They believe she has it all, beauty, a young husband, and riches. What they don't know is Psyche doesn't even know who her husband is and she is not very happy. But when Psyche brought her sisters to the magical palace, she did not reveal this to them. The sisters become envious of her and make a plan to steal her life and riches.

This reminds me of social media because it is easy to get caught up on being envious of someone else's life based on how it appears. Sometimes, what someone chooses to show people isn't always how their life really is. Psyche is only showing her sisters the good parts of her life and even lying about some of it because she knows her sisters have limited access to the truth. Much like instagram, facebook, twitter, it is easy to only show the good parts when in reality everything is not always good.
