Reading Notes: Part A The Man with Five Friends

The Man with Five Friends Story source: Tibetan Folk Tales by A.L. Shelton

I really enjoyed this story. I wish it were longer though. I would have liked to see an extended ending. This is something I am going to consider doing for my story telling this week.

The story is about a man whose father told him before he died that he would live a happy life he followed these two "rules"- The first was to never trust your wife with secrets until you have ten children. The second was to pick your friends by their eyes, and to never choose a friend with light eyes. Only a friend with black eyes, red in the corner and full white around the colored part.

Eventually, the man had a child with his wife and he was so happy that he wanted to trust her. So he put his fathers advice to the test. He told his wife what his father had told him and that he was going to trust her now. But he was skeptical so he killed a hog but pretended like it was a person and showed up at his home. He told his wife that he killed a man and to keep it a secret. During their next fight the wife got so angry she went and told his secret to the official.

The official prepared him for hanging. His friends came to see him and they all had light colored eyes besides one. One of them had the eyes his father was talking about. All of his friends besides the dark colored eye friend pretty much told him that he deserved it for killing the man. The black eyed man bargained with the official and saved his friends life. When he was set free he told the official the whole story and they went and recovered the body of the pig to prove that he wasn't lying.

The story ended there. I would like to know how his other friends and wife felt. If they tried to come back to him and apologize. If they were embarrassed? It is something I may explore.
