Reading Notes A: The Burning of the World

In the The Burning of the World by Cree, I did not expect to get the story I read.

It is a creation story and talks about how certain animals were named. There was a fire and a man, his father and his mother were the only ones left. The young man and his father had a falling out which led to them no longer speaking.

The young man knew that the world would burn again. He made a bow and arrow and shot one arrow to the north, one to the south, one to the east, and finally one to the west. He told everyone that they would be saved from the fire if they went to these four squares of land. Most did not believe him.

Once the fire began and started to spread rapidly, they believed him. Some of them rushed to the squares of land. In the end, there were many animals that made it to the land designated by the young man. He then named these animals and gave them orders on what their purpose was.

The beaver went into the water and the rabbit also wanted to go into the water. The young man told the rabbit that he was not meant for the water because his legs were too long.

A squirrel wanted to be a bear. The young man told the squirrel that despite all his hard work to become a bear, he was too loud. Bears have to be quiet, or humans and other enemies will come and kill them. This is how the squirrel got such bright white eyes, because he wept so much.

When he was done he gave him and his mother new names as well. Her name was Robin and his was Blackbird.
