Reading Notes: The Wicked Woman's Reward

The Wicked Woman's Reward: Filipino Popular Tales by Dean S. Fansler

A king has two women that he loves, so they give birth to children. He said that he would marry whoever gave birth to a boy.
Woman 1 gave birth to a girl, woman 2 gave birth to a boy.
Woman 1 was very jealous, killed her baby and snuck into woman 2's room and stole her baby boy and replaced him with a newborn cat.
The king came to see woman 2 as he heard she has a boy but finds that she only has a kitten.
He orders for her to be drowned in the river immediately.
He moves on to woman 1 who has the boy and he marries her and is smitten with his new family.

Later on, there is a sweet odor coming through the town. No one can figure out what it is and then woman 2's corpse washes up and the townspeople see where the smell is coming from. She is covered with flowers and has birds surrounding her. When the townspeople try to move closer the birds peck away at them, protecting the woman.

The King gets word and goes to see the corpse, he sees that it is woman 2. Her ghost rises before him and tells him that his wife is the one that stole her baby and he killed her without any investigation. She then floated back down the river.

The King orders for her body to be taken from the river and be buried with the noble. They also had a funeral and the King felt great remorse for what he had done. He pushes his wife out of the window and orders for her to hung.

The boy grows up to be a wise and just King when it is his time. This is how they know that Woman 2 really was his mother.
